- Hard Maple: In tree form, hard maple is usually referred to as sugar maple, which is the state tree in Wisconsin, Vermont, New York, and West Virginia. It is nearly white, to an off-white cream color, sometimes with a reddish or golden hue. Hard maple is only slightly harder than soft maple.
- Walnut: The walnut tree grows in Mid and Eastern United States and Canada. The heartwood can range from a lighter pale brown to a dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Its color can also have a grey, purple, or reddish cast.
